OCTOBER 2003 - CASSETTE TAPE ARCHIVE

Five songs from a tape dated 1980 - a sample of toying with different song ideas:

To our knowledge, these are previously never before heard songs.  We may be wrong.  If so, let us know

King Weasel

Yeah Yeah

Wedding Bells - with a short comical interruption ("well, answer it!")

Until It Gets Better

Song About Money

Two songs recorded from friends of Daniel around 1980:

Under That Apple Tree - Tom Gruda - a jam session from a friend of Daniel's
(link removed as it may be copyrighted material)

Lost Without A Brain - Jim S??? - a musician friend of Daniel's

This month's FEATURE LENGTH PRESENTATION

NOTE: Feature-length recordings are best listened to with a streaming mp3 player - Microsoft MediaPlayer 9.0, for instance, will begin to play the song before it finishes downloading.   These are lo-fi mono mp3 files, but still rather large, these are about 12 MB each.

We intend to share some longer recordings, and admittedly, this first lengthy recording is a "slow start" - not one of the more interesting ones, but an emotional trip WITH Daniel at the news of John Lennon's death.  For Daniel, it might be akin to our hearing news of Daniel's death - because without ever having met him, he had a powerful affinity with John through his music.

NEXT MONTH's feature length recording will include the "Dan and Dave show", a pretended radio-show with an animated exchange between David Thornberry and Daniel about art ethics.

Future months will include some of the famous David Thornberry cassette letters, recorded conversations in class, and some of the 1989 New York trip.

CASSETTE # 220 December 8/9, 1980

Some of the first newscasts of the death of John Lennon, Daniel's somber reaction  in several songs, a vigil held by fans.  This cassette is a low-volume recording, and is mostly news-casts.  If you are interested only in Daniel's compositions, etc. you can stop on side A at the beginning of the news casts.

CS0220 SIDE A The tape starts off with some song-writing meanderings / "Heads will always roll" / sudden total attention to news casts about the murder of John Lennon.  Most of this tape is news casts, but listening to the lengthy news and occasional comments is an emotional trip with Daniel through that event.

CS0220 SIDE B continued news casts and candle-light vigil at the news of John Lennon's death
