Daniel Johnston, Uncle Vaya and beer
IBP's ambitious agenda includes a rock-star opera and a ghost-town play

Just because Infernal Bridegroom Productions no longer announces a formal subscription season with set production dates, don't think that Houston's leading avant-garde theater company is not looking to its future.

With artists such as Beck, Tom Waits and the Flaming Lips covering his songs on the album The Late Great Daniel Johnston, Texas singer-songwriter Johnston is enjoying wide popularity. He's developing a rock-star opera for IBP.

Under artistic director Anthony Barilla, IBP has several ambitious projects in development for the next two years, including world premieres of a rock opera by Texas singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston and a play about ghost towns by Obie winner Lisa D'Amour.

Johnston, an Austin-based cult fave, has lately enjoyed his widest popularity. Beck, Tom Waits, the Flaming Lips and others covered his songs on the album The Late Great Daniel Johnston, and this year's Sundance Festival honored a documentary called The Devil and Daniel Johnston.

As of now, the only IBP show with a set opening is Speeding Motorcycle, which will begin Dec. 1 at IBP's home venue, the Axiom.

David Mamet's adaptation of Anton Chekhov's classic Uncle Vanya will follow in spring 2006, directed by IBP mainstay Tamarie Cooper. It's the only project in the lineup that is not a world premiere.

New York-based D'Amour will be in residence at IBP for the creation of Hide Town, her play inspired by "the sublime charm of Southwestern ghost towns." It will premiere in fall 2006.

Lindsay Kayser of Austin's Gypsy Baby Theater, which performed at IBP last fall, is writing a play that will run in the Axiom's lobby in spring 2006.

Kayser also is collaborating with Barilla on an opera to be workshopped in the latter half of 2006 and premiered early in 2007. Titled 3 Ft. No Diving, it portrays a fictional American town whose chief export is fireworks. The town must rethink its identity when a fireworks factory worker spontaneously combusts.

IBP will venture beyond live performing arts to produce an independent film on the theme of "numbers stations" (enigmatic shortwave radio transmissions). Troy Schulze is writing it with his Me-Sci-Ah collaborator George Parker. IBP will screen its premiere in summer 2006 as part of a mini-festival of short films and live music.

And as the company vows, "When IBP screens a movie, you're always allowed to bring your beer into the theater."

SPEEDING MOTORCYCLE  http://www.theatreport.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=454
Last year, we told you about the prestigious MAP grant IBP was awarded to develop an original rock opera written by the legendary Texas singer-songwriter (and America’s vanguard “outsider” artist) Daniel Johnston. And IBP is pumped beyond belief to begin rehearsals.
“I thought it sounded like a cool idea,” says Johnston, “and then I saw some videos of IBP shows, and my heart jumped for joy, because the shows were really entertaining and really put together well. And the project sounded like something that could really live on.”
Speeding Motorcycle will be performed by IBP’s resident company and orchestra, and it draws on the themes that inform Johnston’s music – unrequited love, pop figures, Captain America and the like. “I’m a Dr. Seuss fan and I’m a Beatles fan,” explains Johnston, “and I love rock operas—all the way from Jesus Christ Superstar to Tommy and many others. I’ve used songs from some of my albums; and I’ve got a lot of unpublished and unrecorded songs, and I’m including some of those, too.”
A cult figure in the music world, Johnston’s reputation has risen lately due to a recent tribute album of Johnston songs covered by Beck, Tom Waits and the Flaming Lips; and a critically acclaimed film documentary, The Devil and Daniel Johnston, which took top honors at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Speeding Motorcycle is scheduled to open December 1 at the Axiom.

CHRISSIE ILES AND PHILIPPE VERGNE TO CURATE 2006 BIENNIAL2006 curators
Chrissie Iles and Philippe Vergne. © 2005 Charles Eshelman

NEW YORK, January 14, 2005 -- The 2006 Whitney Biennial, the nation’s signature survey of contemporary American art, will be organized by Chrissie Iles, curator, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Philippe Vergne, senior curator of visual arts at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and recently been named director of the new François Pinault Foundation for Contemporary Art in Paris. Iles was one of the three curators of the 2004 Biennial; this will be Vergne’s first experience as a Biennial curator.

Iles and Vergne will spend the rest of the year seeking out the most significant artists working today. The list of selected artists is announced toward the end of 2005. The seventy-third in the series of Annual and Biennial exhibitions inaugurated in 1932 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, the 2006 Biennial will be on view from March through May 2006.

In naming the curators, Adam D. Weinberg, the Whitney’s Alice Pratt Brown Director, said, “Each Whitney Biennial is an historic event we anticipate greatly, and each is completely different from the past. Chrissie and Philippe are experienced, passionate, and deeply committed. Both are thoroughly familiar with the contemporary American scene, and their partnership will also bring a broad international perspective to the project as well as enormous insight, energy, and flair. It will be a provocative and powerful show of the best new work by emerging and established artists.”
