ABOUT DANIEL JOHNSTON AND HIS ART:  Daniel's drawings - and particularly the characters in the colorful pen and marker drawings of recent years - are spontaneous "stream of consciousness" drawings.  This is characteristic of the "compulsive" artist: those who MUST constantly and compulsively create in their music or art or drama.   These drawings are products of his imagination in motion.
Daniel remarks that when he puts the pen to a blank page, he doesn't really know what is going to come out.  As the characters appear, though, he imagines things that they might say - some of which may get put on the page.
Many of the characters are recognizable, a few seem to appear only occasionally and some maybe  only once.   Some are people out of Daniel's past who appear as visages in the background, appearing to influence the story, although without explanation in the drawing as in his head.
The appreciation for Daniel's drawings stems a great deal from an appreciation of Daniel himself.  Those of us who know his music well (particularly the older tapes) feel an affinity to Daniel and we connect with that sensitive, creative and remarkably imaginative person in these pictures.
Daniel is a rare anomaly, if for no other reason than for all the hell he has lived through, for him to be the artistic peddler of optimism and hope.  If Daniel can hope, we are certain we should find it in ourselves to be hopeful.   Thank you, Daniel.

Thank you for the MANY birthday wishes - Daniel smiled long and hard reading through the emails!!!

LYRICS:   Kool-Aid Medley (Why Me? 1999) thanks to our MEMBER OF THE MONTH Matthew Lombardo

I’m drinking my life away even though it’s only Kool Aid . . .

. . . Get yourself together or fall apart

Make your mind up or let yourself down . .

. . .After my first thousand years in Hell

I was burning couldn’t stand the smell

After my second thousand years in hell

I’m feeling sorry for myself . . .
